Nigeria and the UNWTO
Nigeria was elected into the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) by the Organization’s General Assembly, at its meeting held in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea in October, 2011, for a term of four (4) years, 2011 – 2015.
As an indication of its commitment to the ideals of the UNWTO, Nigeria hosted the 53rd Meeting of the Organization’s Regional Commission for Africa in Calabar in June, 2012. The UNWTO has its Headquarters in Madrid, Spain. The Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, Her Excellency Mrs. Bianca Olivia Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in consonance with the usual practice, is also accredited to the Organization as Nigerian’s Permanent Representative.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.
